Last Moments of Father & Son Before Grisly New Year Accident

The father to one of the boys who died in an accident that claimed five on Wednesday, January 1, has narrated his last moments with his son.

Speaking to The Standard, Kiptoo Koskei Korir, who was still reeling from the shock of the untimely death of his son, Bramwell Kiptoo, recalled how jovial he had been on the day he would meet his death.

"He was upbeat because I had assured him that we had enough money to send him to university next year. I can't believe he is gone," Korir told the publication.

Barnabas Kitilit, the father to another victim of the accident, Philip Kemboi, stated that he had lent his vehicle to his son, who stated that he was attending a New Year's party at Taidy's Restaurant in Eldama Ravine.

He added that the family had earlier on visited their in-laws in Emining, noting that his son drove one of the two vehicles they had travelled in.

"We went to Emining and came back well. Upon reaching Eldama Ravine at around 11 p.m., I proceeded home as my son said he wanted to have a party to usher in the new year with his friends," Kitilit told the publication.

The vehicle the five were traveling in is said to have veered off the Eldama Ravine-Eldoret road, hit a culvert and landed in a ditch.

Eldama Ravine Police commander Rashid Mohammad confirmed the incident, stating that the five died on the spot.

“They were heading home after the party when the vehicle veered off the road, hit a culvert and landed in a ditch. It is a self-inflicted road accident,” he stated.

His statement was corroborated by some of the area residents who happened to reach the scenes moments after the accident.
