Stampede Survivor Collapses & Dies

Salina Bilal, a Standard five pupil who survived the Kakamega stampede on Monday, February 3, has died.

The late Bilal had just been released from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital.

According to Daily Nation, her distressed family narrated that she collapsed soon after she arrived at their home in Amalemba estate.

The girl's uncle, Ibrahim Bakari, stated that Bilal had been rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

"The doctors should have admitted the girl in the ward for observation before discharging her. This is very sad," he stated.

Bilal had spent a week at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

According to the County pathologist, Dickson Muchana, the deceased is said to have had a lung problem that was allegedly caused by the pile-up of students during the stampede.

This demise brings the death toll to 15 pupils who lost their lives following a stampede that is believed to have occurred as they were running away from their classes on February 3, at around 5 p.m.

39 others had been injured and rushed to Kakamega County Referral Hospital, following the tragic incident that happened.

On Monday, February 11, the school re-opened and Bishop Benson Shishia of the Church of God led the pupils in a 3-hour prayer session.

Investigations into what caused the stampede is still ongoing.
