From Uhuru's Security Officer to Renowned Female Musician

Popular musician and former President Uhuru Kenyatta's security officer, Lucy Wangechi Chineke's journey has been remarkable.

Wangechi narrated to Kikuyu Diaspora TV that she was born in a small village called Mutithi in Kirinyaga County.

She disclosed that area residents had to make contributions to enable her to acquire an education.

"My father passed on and my mother did not have a job, hence, some of Mutithi area residents decided to cater for my education until Form Four because I was clever and disciplined in school. I am forever indebted to them," Wangechi conceded.

She got a job at State House as a security officer months after she had completed her high school studies.

"After Form Four I got a job as a simu ya jamii attendant and my employer would pay me Ksh2,400. As I was working there, a friend of mine told me that the youth were being recruited into the GSU and encouraged me to try my luck.

"I went for recruitment and when they asked us to run, I did my best and got the first position. When we finished, I was told that I had been picked to continue with the next level. I was the only girl from my county," she continued.

The Cheneke hit singer stated that she was sent to GSU Training School in Magadi and despite the challenges, was posted to State House.

"I graduated and was posted at State House. I provided protection for former President Mwai Kibaki and the current President Uhuru Kenyatta," she stated.

When asked if any of the two presidents knew her, Wangechi stated, "It was a job and I was very professional and would only salute them when we crossed paths."

Wangechi wanted to pursue a career in music and would often perform in roadshows during her off days or when on leave.

"I used to do roadshows every time I was on leave. I went to Eldoret, Githurai, Nakuru and many other places and that's how people got to know me.

"In 2013, people started requesting me to perform in various places and I decided to resign because I did not want to keep absconding work," she stated.

She has since released a couple of songs including; Chineke, Igwe, Thamaka and Wimuririkane.

Wangechi advises Kenyans not to give up and seek God, who has a plan for each and every one of them.
