A section of residents of Teso North Constituency was incensed after their MP Oku Kaunya donated a branded bucketful of condoms allegedly to help fight Covid-19.

Boda boda riders at Malaba Roadblock Stage were taken aback by their MP's donation as they grappled to purchase masks as required by the national government's protocol to contain the virus.

In a video that surfaced online on Thursday, April 9, confirmed receipt of the unusual donation stating, "The donation that we have received from honourable Oku is a bucket branded 'funded by Oku Kaunya' and inside the bucket are two boxes of condoms worth Ksh250."

The boda boda owner expressed his dissatisfaction in the MP's donation, "We are shocked but we will use them because condoms have their specific use and if it will help mitigate Corona, we will be thankful.

"We are being told, Corona is being fought by using things like masks and we as boda boda operators if we are going be given this and it is a donation from the government or our leaders, we will use it."

A number of leaders most notably Governor Ali Joho, Charity Ngilu and Alfred Mutua have been on the forefront of fighting the virus in their jurisdictions.

The rider went on to lament about lack of help from the MP, "We want what is being told in the media and what is happening on the ground to be the same thing.

"We don't want to listen to news that will make us happy but on the ground the government is not helping, we as boda boda riders don't see the work our leader is doing."

The rider complained about the MP using his school for meetings and favouring his immediate surrounding area in development.

The government on Monday, March 30 ordered boda boda riders to wear face masks and limit the number of passengers to one per trip.

"The riders will be required to carry just one passenger, so they maintain some level of distance and wear protective masks to combat the spread of the virus," said Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.

As of Wednesday, April 7, the country had reported a total number of 179 positive cases, nine recoveries and six fatalities.
