A woman in Siaya county had a brush with death at the hands of her husband who allegedly attempted to slit her throat while she was asleep.
On October 23, Maureen Anyango, who is a mother of four narrated how her partner assaulted her with a machete following an argument that she thought had been resolved.
The local pastor had intervened and resolved their marriage woes. Following the meeting, Anyango retired to bed when the incident happened.
"I woke to find him slitting my neck and that is when we started struggling," she claimed.
Anyango was reportedly saved by neighbors and her son who heard the commotion.
She was later taken to hospital for emergency treatment and is nursing the scars from the attack.
She is now demanding for her husband's arrest and prosecution following the incident.
Cases of violence against women have been on the rise with The national GBV Hotline 1195 received 810 cases in September (as of 29 September 2020) compared to 646 cases in August, an increase of 25%.
According to a report by the National Crime Research Centre cases of gender-based violence reporting were found to be low.
Only 15.2% of female and 16.7% of male respondents who had ever been sexually violated had reported or had someone else report the act of sexual violence.
Due to instances of cases going unreported, few women get justice or receive medical care.
President Uhuru Kenyatta Kenya’s in July 2020, ordered an investigation into rising reports of violence against women and girls, including rape, domestic violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage, as a result of coronavirus restrictions.
“If the family is under attack, the state is under attack. If the family is weak, the country is weak. I order the National Crime Research Centre to probe the escalating cases of gender-based violence (and) the worrying trend of cases where the girl child has been disempowered," he stated.
