A suspected killer has been sentenced to serve 15 years in jail after strands of hair belonging to his murdered girlfriend linked him to her cruel death.
A report by The Standard on Sunday, November 15, indicated that the convict, James Gitau, was successfully linked to the murder of his lover Susan Wanjiru.
Judge Joel Ngugi ruled that the strands of hair proved that Gitau assaulted his lover with whom they shared a house in Nakuru County.
"The wig pointed to the fact that the assault happened inside the house. Only the accused person had the opportunity to cause the injuries to the deceased as they were only two in the house," stated the judge.
The strands of hair, which originated from a wig the deceased was wearing at the time of her killing, were found near her body and the convict is said to have attempted to conceal the evidence by washing her clothes.
The Judge also noted that the hair proved that he (Gitau) assaulted his lover and that they were only two in the house at the time of the incident.
"The accused did not explain the suspicious attempts to conceal evidence by cleaning his house and washing the trousers Wanjiru wore when she was last seen alive," he added.
The court took into account the fact that Gitau had been in custody since the incident happened in2014 while delivering his sentence.
“Considering the accused is a first offender, I believe that 15 years’ jail term is the appropriate punishment.
Considering he has been in detention since December 30, 2014, his sentence will start to run from then,” he continued.
Prosecutor of the case had provided six witnesses in the murder case and Gitau was found guilty of the offence in June 2019.
Some of the witnesses confirmed that the couple had fought for numerous occasion that on the fateful day, neighbours did not intervene due to their history of disagreements.
