Four pupils In Kirinyaga County were arrested for allegedly being in possession of several rolls of bhang in school.
According to Kirinyaga East Sub-County Police Commander, Anthony Wanjuu, all the 4 pupils who are in Standard 7 and 8, confessed to smoking bhang in school.
“They told us they have been smoking bhang during lunch and break time," said Mr. Wanjuu.
The Sub-County Police Commander also said that a match box was recovered from the pupils after they were frisked.
The police boss further stated that the pupils were arrested and taken to Kianyaga Police Station for interrogation.
The officer added that this was the first case of that nature to be reported in the area.
He warned that the government will not sit and watch drug peddlers ruin the lives of the young school going children in the area.
“We have learnt the learners are buying bhang from notorious drug peddlers, and we are pursuing them," he said.
The officer further urged parents to monitor their children and caution them from using drugs.
“It is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that their children don't abuse drugs which are being sold by unscrupulous traders in the area," he said.
On February 18 2021, Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie renewed calls for Parliament to craft a law to legalize the industrial and medicinal use of marijuana. Kiarie said the country can no longer be blind to its economic benefits.
Several MPs and politician have called for the legalisation of bhang. In 2018, the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth filed a notice in the National Assembly introducing the Marijuana Control Bill 2018 to decriminalise the use of marijuana.
