A two-year-old child was on March 1, 2021, rescued after falling and nearly drowning in a water pit at a construction site in Kitengela, Nairobi County.

The giant pit was filled with dirty water that appeared to conceal its actual depth.

A Good Samaritan pulled the child from the water before administering Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as the other residents watched in disbelief.

The child was later rushed to the hospital.

A witness identified as John Kamau revealed how panic-stricken residents ran to the scene just in time to rescue the child after other children reported that their colleague had drowned.

"This is reckless and a health hazard, kids do not view it that way. We beseech all those setting up structures and have dug up holes to provide water, kindly cover them to protect anyone from falling and losing their lives," he added.

Doctors confirmed that the boy was in a stable condition.

"We received the child from a Good Samaritan having drowned. He was in a subconscious state, so we started CPR immediately, tried suction to check for things in the airway, and found it to be clear. We put him on oxygen since the saturation was low initially at below 80. It Improved to 90, "  said the doctor

Residents are now pleading with authorities to take legal action against contractors who leave bare pits open.

"These pits are dangerous. A kid has been rescued here in an unconscious state and rushed to a hospital. We are pleading with authorities to take action," decried another resident.

The residents said that they have lost a man and another child in the pits that construction sites leave uncovered.
