Traders at the famous Fig Tress Ngara Market are counting losses after they woke up to demolished stalls on Tuesday morning, July 27.

A number of makeshift stalls were demolished in unclear circumstances. A video watched by Kenyans.co.ke showed some of the traders wailing and lamenting after finding their stock and investment had been destroyed without an explanation. 

Former Starehe MP Bishop Magaret Wanjiru arrived on the site after receiving received numerous calls from people asking about the market.

She also left the traders the traders Ksh100,000 to share amongst themselves.

"I did not come here well prepared but I believe the little I have should help in one way or another," stated Wanjiru.

She condemned the demolition of the stalls belonging to greengrocers, fruit mongers, boutique owners and food vendors.

The Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant promised the traders that she would request Deputy President William Ruto intervene as the traders began chanting his name.

The demolitions were allegedly initiated by a Nairobi businessperson who wants to use the prime property as a parking lot.

Police officers arrived at the scene to contain the situation as the traders had planned to stone property owned by the developer.

On July 10, business owners along Manyanja Road, Embakasi lost after their business premise was brought down in a sting operation at night.

The businessmen disclosed that they were not offered an opportunity to salvage their property.
