A group of police officers broke into Law Society of Kenya (LSK) offices located along Gitanga Road in Nairobi on Tuesday, August 10.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, LSK President Nelson Havi confirmed the incident complaining that the raid was a serious breach of the society's independence. The incident was corroborated by videos he shared through his official social media page.
Havi stated that police officers' move to break into their headquarters was a well-choreographed scheme by fired officials who want to cling to power.
Havi noted that the commotion witnessed was after LSK acquired new guards after learning of the plans by old officials to storm their offices.
The outspoken LSK President claimed that officials who were replaced by the party had resolved to use the police to reinstall themselves.
On August 2, the same incident happened where police locked up the board room, preventing a meeting he claimed was lawful.
Havi questioned the presence of the cops at the LSK offices who claimed to be following orders from above.
"I am not afraid of guns. I am asking you to leave," Havi told the two officers, "Please leave. This is private property," Havi was heard shouting during the confrontation.
The frequent clash with police officers is attributed to some of the changes instituted by the society led by Havi.
On July 30, LSK announced Josephat Mutunga Mutisya as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and secretary of its' council.
Mutisya was to replace the embattled LSK CEO Mercy Wambua whose term was supposed to expire on February 27, 2022.
Other replacements that ignited wrangles in the society include; Juliette Akoth Jakalia who took over as Director Compliance and Ethics/Deputy Secretary of Council and Veronicah Achieng Odipo who took over as the Director of Practice and Standards.
The three appointments escalated the wrangles as they had moved to the Employment and Labour Relations court seeking orders to block their replacement.
