Former MP Elected to Global Justice Body

Former Meru Woman Representative, Florence Kajuju, has been elected to serve on the board of directors of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI).

In a statement released by the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ) on Saturday, October 23, the office of the Ombudsman confirmed Kajuju's election, stating that the former legislator will be representing Africa at the global justice body.

Kajuju, who served as a legislator from 2013-2017,  is currently Kenya's ombudsman following her appointment as CAJ's chairperson by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2018.

"The Chairperson of the Commission Florence Kajuju has been elected to the Board of Directors of the  IOI as one of the four representatives of the African Region," read the statement.

Upon her election, Kajuju will serve on the board for a period of four years advocating for African interests having been elected to the board during an extraordinary meeting of IOI members in Turkey.

"Elected for a term of four years, Kajuju will serve the Regional African Chapter alongside heads of equivalent ombudsman institutions of Angola, South Africa, and Zambia," read the statement in part.

The IOI is a global body that incorporates independent offices of the ombudsman all over the world.

"Established in 1978, the IOI is the only global organisation for the cooperation of more than 200 independent Ombudsman institutions from more than 100 countries worldwide," the CAJ stated.

The global justice body is mandated to promote good governance across the member states through various initiatives in partnership with the respective justice offices. 

"The IOI supports its members through training, research, and regional subsidies for projects. It is organised in six regional chapters mainly, Africa, Asia, Australasia & Pacific, Europe, the Caribbean & Latin America, and North America," read the statement in part.

Since the announcement, a section of social media users led by the Commission's vice chair, Washington Sati, took to social media to congratulate the former legislator on her new role.

Kajuju has been vocal on administration matters, with the Ombudsman opening investigations against a chief who was captured dousing a woman with chang'aa in Uasin Gishu on Saturday, April 11.
