Police have launched a manhunt for the owner of a Toyota Probox who ran over a Mombasa city traffic officer on Monday night, February 21.

According to a police statement, Fiona Ndanu had pulled over the driver at Abdullah Farsi road in Mombasa- in what was meant to be a routine traffic check.

Ndanu proceeded to the Probox in order to request the driver's license, but in a weird turn of events, the motorist raised the car window and ran over the traffic officer, dragging her body for five metres before speeding off.

Mombasa OCPD, Joseph Ongaya, confirmed the incident noting that they would not treat the matter lightly. He added that the incident would be treated as a criminal act.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) official site, the license plate of the Toyota Probox is KCT 410E.

He noted that officer Ndanu was still recuperating in hospital but has dire injuries in all of her limbs.

"We thank God that examination from the medics have exonerated her fracture so she is free from danger and is making huge progres," he stated.

Ongaya also ordered the motorist to either surrender himself or face dire consequences.

"You know yourself and we know you and this is the instruction I'm giving. The best thing you can do is to surrender yourself to any police station that is near to you or to Makupa police station.

"Otherwise the other option is very clear, we are coming for you, and we will get you, that I am certain of," Ongaya noted.

The news comes as NTSA launched a crackdown in Nairobi this week in order to check compliance and whether the vehicles are roadworthy.

Police spokesperson Bruno Shioso affirmed that the impromptu crackdown targeted various routes along Nairobi.

"Yes, there's been a multiagency crackdown on traffic violations generally aimed at improving compliance at the traffic legal regime," Shioso stated.
