Meru Governor and Devolution Empowerment Party leader, Kiraitu Murungi, has officially endorsed the Azimio La Umoja movement as his coalition of choice in the upcoming August 9 General Election.

Kiraitu made the announcement on Tuesday, March 8, further declaring his support for Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga.

The Meru Governor explained that he made the move after a careful analysis of the political landscape and after consultations with his constituent.

"We have done our analysis, we have done our research, the next President of the Republic of Kenya is Raila Amollo Odinga," he stated.

The Devolution Empowerment Party boss made the announcement in a meeting attended by ODM leaders Junet Mohamed (Suna East MP) and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya among others.

The announcement is a major about-turn from his recent political pronouncement in which he appeared to attack the coalitions of both Raila and Deputy President William Ruto.

Immediately after the Sagana meeting in February, he hit out at Raila's campaign agenda that seeks to give the vulnerable people in Kenya a Ksh6,000 stipend.

At the time, he had argued that the two were cut from the same clothes due to their promises he claimed were not attainable.

He had also taken an issue with the DP's plan to inject Ksh100 billion shillings to help uplift greengrocers and the youth in his bottom-up economic model.

"There are some who are going around claiming that if they ascend to power, they will give each family Ksh6,000.

"Others are saying that they will give out Ksh100 billion to uplift the youth and greengrocers. Please spare us that talk," the Meru County boss stated at the time.

Kiraitu has previously revealed that he will defend his seat in the upcoming elections.
