Former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta on Saturday, April 2, shaved the dreadlocks of Field Marshall Muthoni in a historic cultural event that was attended by Mau Mau veterans and council of elders.

Media reports indicated that the ceremony was a symbol of Mama Ngina settling differences with Field Marshall Muthoni. The ceremony took place at Muthoni's home in Nyeri town.

The one-of-a-kind event was organized by the Kikuyu Council of Elders Chairman Wachira Kiago. Mama Ngina was accompanied by the chair of women league Agnes Kagure.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke,Kiago set the record straight and explained in detail the symbolic meaning of the historic move.

"First and foremost, they didn't have differences between them. In the case of the dreadlocks, she had stayed with it (for over 60 years) over the fact that freedom is not yet over according to her.

"She, however, requested Mama Ngina to cut the hair for what President Uhuru Kenyatta has done to this country," he noted.

He also stated that the shaving of Field Marshall's hair was a symbol of an end of an era that symbolised that freedom is actualised decades after independence.

"She has witnessed that now freedom is there. Further, in order for her to bless Uhuru, the hair had to be cut first. A goat was also slaughtered and the blood flowed in order to bring peace between all Kenyans to the Kikuyu community, that was the will of Field Marshall," he stated.

The photos which went viral online, drew mixed reactions Kenyans who shared different sentiments about the symbolic act.

This is the second time that Mama Ngina has made a public appearance in four weeks, with the initial one raising political eyebrows.

The former First Lady slammed her Uhuru's critics, attributing their insults to poor upbringing.

"Depending on how one is raised up, that is the exact same behaviour they will carry with them. If you were not taught to go insulting people, then you will not do it. I want to tell those who are engaging in insults that we will leave them like that, if at all they were taught insults while growing up, that is up to them,” she stated during a recent burial held in Gatundu, Kiambu County.
