The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has launched electronic voter verification three months to the August 9 polls.
In a statement by the electoral body dated Thursday, May 5, IEBC announced that Kenyans can verify details of their registration by sending SMS or through the portal.
The exercise commenced yesterday (May 5) and will end on Thursday, June 2.
How to Verify
Registered voters can send their ID or passport numbers used in the registration process via SMS to 70000.
Alternatively, Kenyans can visit the IEBC voter verification portal and insert their details on the electronic platform. Further, the electoral body stated that incorrect data would be rectified before the exercise is closed, further giving a directive.
"Visit the commission website portal verify(dot)iebc(dot)or(dot)ke. In the event, your details are incorrectly captured, visit your registration center," read the statement in part.
Additionally, IEBC stated that their officials in their registration centers across the country would also help Kenyans struggling with the electronic methods.
"Visit your registration center or IEBC office in your constituency with your original ID or valid passport that you used to register as a voter," IEBC stated.
Upon requesting verification, IEBC will send details of the voter's name, gender, date of birth, county, constituency, ward and the polling station.
The statement by the electoral body comes days after the commission postponed countrywide voter registration until March 13, 2023.
IEBC chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, noted that the move would help registered voters verify their biometrics even as the commission cleans up the voter register ahead of the August 9 polls.
"In exercise of powers conferred by Article 83 and 88 (4) of the Constitution of Kenya, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) gives notice that the application for new registration and change in registration of voters in Kenya and for Kenyan citizens living outside the country shall be suspended from May 4, 2022, to March 13, 2023.
"The Commission notifies the public that this suspension is to enable the availability of the register of voters to the public for purposes of verification of biometric data and particulars of registered voters in accordance with section 6A of the Elections Act, 2011," IEBC announced.
