Driver Was Drunk - Survivors of Kitui Crash Recount Last Moments

UPDATE: Monday, June 6: Another accident has occurred at the Kanyonyoo area in Kitui County claiming the lives of two people.

Several other people sustained serious injuries in the incident.

This comes barely 48 hours after 12 lives were lost at the same spot. The occupants of the matatu had just left a ruracio event.


of the ill-fated Kitui bus have broken their silence over what transpired before the accident on the night of Saturday, June 4.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, June 5, one of the survivors noted that the driver was intoxicated when he took over the wheel.

He further explained that the vehicle was overloaded since it had 21 occupants although it is designed to accommodate a maximum of 14 passengers.

"We were over 21 people in that vehicle and the driver was drunk because he ignored our advice," stated one of the survivors.

Another survivor told Citizen TV that the accident was somewhat of a flash since the driver swerved to avoid hitting a vehicle before the matatu flipped over swerving off the road.

Nine people passed away instantly while three others died in the hospital while receiving treatment bringing the total tally to 12.

"He nearly hit a car on the road but he swerved off. When he was making his way back on the road, the car flipped and rolled over.  I found myself outside the vehicle and people were scattered everywhere," corroborated another.

Confirming the incident, Kitui Police Commander Leah Kitheyi noted that the accident took place at 11:50 p.m. with most victims being related by blood.

One of the family members noted that their family is still grappling with the tragedy that wiped out their kin who were leaving a celebratory ruracio ceremony.

"We have been hit hard because we have these children and we are thinking about how we will go about the tragedy," she stated.

The matatu, in which the 21 were travelling in, was involved in the accident at Kanyonyoo junction in Kitui County. . The vehicle was bound for Kitui town.
