A parent at the St Peters Catholic Primary School in Nakuru was reportedly offered Ksh50,000 in exchange for her silence after a teacher broke her daughter's arm while administering corporal punishment.

Speaking to the media, Joyline Koikai's mother lamented that the school's administration appeared to lean more on protecting the teacher.

The embattled parent alleged that she confronted the school only to be asked to consider the teacher's future.

"They convened a meeting between the instructor and myself. He offered us Ksh50,000 stating that if the matter was escalated, he would not only lose his job but also his career.

"In addition, the school offered to waive Joyline's school fees for one academic year so that the matter would be 'forgotten'," she added.

The distraught mother, however, insisted on reporting the case to the police. She also recounted how she initially dismissed her daughter when she first raised the alarm.

"She came home and told me they had been punished and I advised her that it was for her own benefit, only to notice that she kept on using her left arm whenever I assigned her house chores," she claimed.

According to Joyline, the teacher punished her and along with her classmates for failing to attain certain marks in an assessment test.

She added that she began feeling insurmountable pain days after the incident.

Upon a medical assessment at a hospital, an x-ray result showed that her arm was broken. The student was yet to report back to school.

The incident comes barely a week after a student was beaten by his teacher for not attaining 400 marks in an exam.

A video of the incident went viral, attracting the attention of Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) George Magoha, who cautioned teachers against administering corporal punishment

"It is totally against the law to apply any stick on a child, my personal opinion notwithstanding. It is savage to cane a child like an animal."

"For those teachers, irrespective of their number, the TSC will deal with them. But for the police, you have work to do to ensure they face the full force of the law," he stated.
