Azimio Members of Parliament led by Ugunja legislator Opiyo Wandayi have protested the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) move to sanction its Deputy Chief Executive Officer.
The MPs on Wednesday, September 21, gave the electoral agency a 48-hour ultimatum to revoke the decision to interdict Deputy CEO Ruth Kulundu or face unspecified actions.
“We are aware that Chebukati and his two fellow Commissioners have embarked on what we could refer to as immature boundary delimitation, a few days before they proceed to their terminal leaves, so the question we are asking is what's the hype?
And yet we have five years until the next election that you can't wait for other commissioners to come and replace,” Opiyo stated.
The deputy CEO was sanctioned in a crackdown on senior electoral commission staff alleged to have aided the operations of four commissioners who disowned Wafula Chebukati's declaration of the Presidential results.
The jitters in Azimio come after IEBC chief executive officer Marjan Hussein Marjan was reported to have written to the deputy CEO accusing him of gross misconduct.
Wandayi who is being fronted by the ODM party for the Majority post in the National Assembly was flanked by Nominated MP Sabina Chege, and Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris who accused the Chebukati-led body for acting against the law by harassing hard working officers.
The MPs were addressing journalists during their induction at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi, where they accused Chebukati of creating confusion and intimidating staff.
Nairobi Women Representative, Esther Passaris slammed President Ruto, claiming that he was on a witch-hunt mission, yet he promised to serve all Kenyans and respect the Constitution.
"We do not agree with everything the IEBC and Supreme Court did. The 8 million Kenyans who didn’t vote was because they didn’t have confidence in IEBC," she stated.
Further, Wandayi asked IEBC Chebukati, Commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu to go home and avoid confusing the commission, threatening them with unspecified action.
“In the next few days Chebukati, Guliye and Molu, you are going home and if you dare refuse to go home the people of Kenya will take you home,” Wandayi Stated.
The irate lawmakers argued that Chebukati was acting in total disregard of the law and harassing officers who diligently perform their duties.
