Police Officer Shoots Two Colleagues Dead, Turns Gun on Self

A police officer on Sunday, October 23, died by suicide after turning the gun on himself minutes after shooting dead two of his colleagues at Moyale Police Station, Marsabit County.

In a police report seen by Kenyans.co.ke the police constable stole the firearm from a colleague before heading to the armoury where he killed two other cops.

"PC Lawrence picked a huge stone and hit PC Orero on the forehead handpicked his rifle before rushing to the armoury where other officers were picking arms for the day's duty.

"He shot at the in-charge lines, killing him instantly and also shot at PC Matete dead," read the report in part.

A third officer sustained a gunshot wound in his left arm. The officer then returned to his house, where he pulled the trigger on himself.

"PC Kumber then went back to his house where he locked the door from inside and shot himself on the chin," read the statement under OB Number 09/23/10/2023.

The bodies of the deceased and his victims were ferried to the Moyale Sub-County Hospital Mortuary.

The two injured officers were rushed to the Alhilal Hospital. According to the police, the cop shot in his arms is in critical condition.

Moyale County Commissioner Paul Rotich told the media that the motive of the attack remains unknown. However, officers have launched investigations into the matter.

The early morning incident comes amid concerns over the rising number of suicide and murder cases among police officers in the country.

During his vetting by the National Assembly, Interior Cabinet Secretary nominee Kithure Kindiki pledged to address the welfare of uniformed officers including their mental well-being.

"If approved, I intend to equip, expand and fully capitalize the wellness and counselling units, which will be linked with the Kenya Police Service and the Kenya Prison Service hospitals," Kindiki stated.
