A police officer convicted in the murder of Lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and a taxi driver pleaded with the court to be granted special meals.
Appearing before Justice Daniel Ogembo on Friday, November 11, the officer indicated that he had a medical condition and needed to be served other meals.
In particular, he indicated they were being offered githeri in prison, yet he preferred ugali.
"I can't eat prison food. I prefer Ugali. I don't eat when they cook githeri. I want the court to order them to provide cabbage, ugali and milk," he stated.
The judge directed medical practitioners to conduct an examination to establish his condition.
Justice Ogembo further directed the probation officer's pre-sentence report to be served on all accused persons to enable their lawyers to access it.
Defence lawyers were also granted the liberty to file any further submissions they wished in response to the pre-sentence report.
"Counsel for first and second accused to be served with the notice for sentence. The second accused to liaise with the prison hospital for a special diet due to his medical condition," he directed.
The case will be mentioned before Justice Lessit on December 16 for sentencing.
Initially, three officers, namely Fredrick Leliman, Stephen Cheburet and Sylvia Wanjiku and informer Peter Ngugi were to be sentenced today, Friday, November 11.
However, the sentencing was postponed since Justice Lessit was away on official duty.
The four were convicted for the murder of lawyer Kimani, his client Josephat Mwendwa and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri in 2016.
Victim impact statements set to help the judge in the sentencing were filed on September 23.
