The Office of the Governor in Embu County affirmed that the 365 patients, who were hospitalised for consuming cheap and contaminated meat, were in stable condition.

In a statement, the county government noted that at least 1,000 may have been exposed to Anthrax after 200 households bought the meat.

The government moved to identify all those who consumed the contaminated meat.

"The anticipated number of all those who may have consumed the meat is estimated at 1,000 since 200 households may have bought the contaminated meat. Three dogs and two cats have as well been affected by the contaminated meat and are on veterinary surveillance," the statement read in part.

The county government noted that resources would be mobilised to create awareness creation through the area Assistant Chief.

In addition, a manhunt was launched for the arrest and subsequent prosecution of the Animal Health Assistant who posed as a meat inspector.

After the incident, an urgent medical camp was organized and all suspected cases were screened and treated at Gatumbi dispensary on March 20, 2023. The county government waived the cost of drugs to the victims.

The incident, which left 365 hospitalised, saw one person confirmed dead.

It was reported that the deceased, who resided in Gatumbi Village, had helped his neighbour slaughter a cow. The animal was later sold to hundreds of residents in Runyenjes, leading to the suspected Anthrax outbreak.

When the deceased began developing anthrax-like symptoms, he was rushed to Runyenjes Level 4 Hospital for medical treatment. However, he was transferred to Embu Level 5 Hospital after his health deteriorated.

Those who purchased the meat began complaining of vomiting, difficulty in breathing, tremors and lesions on their hands.

As a result, hundreds were hospitalised at Embu Level 5 hospital.
