Senior NTV News Anchor James Smart has been feted as a change maker in the media industry in the United Kingdom.
The anchor, who hosts With All Due Respect show and doubles as the Nation Media Group Managing Editor of newsroom production. was named among 30 alumni of Cardiff University creating a positive impact around the world.
He was honored at an event held at the institution based along the coast of south Wales on Thursday evening.
Smart's work at NMG cuts across television, newspaper, radio, and online.
"He has previously worked as a talk show host and anchor on top current affairs shows in Kenya including ‘The Trend’, a programme focused on young people and current events, and ‘News Sources’ which integrated journalists’ opinions with current affairs," read a description of the anchor.
"He produced one of the top crime podcast series ‘Case Number Zero’ that investigated the disappearance of a former journalist in Kenya, in a captivating series that has over 1 million listens. Other recent productions include ‘Paradise Lost’, the story of a former TV personality and his struggles, and ‘A Country of Gamblers’, which looks at unethical gambling in Kenya."
He was also hailed for telling stories with empathy and finding ways to make journalism meaningful and impactful.
In a statement, Smart revealed that he was inspired to join the industry in order to tell his own story.
"I came into journalism to tell my own story. I don't believe there is anything like the 'voiceless', there's the deliberately unheard and the preferably not listened to sections of our society," he stated.
"Humbled to be this year's Cardiff University Journalism and Media (30ish) award recipient."
The Cardiff University’s 30(ish) Awards were created to celebrate the institution's alumni making positive contributions to their communities.
The recipients either nominate themselves or are presented by their colleagues after which a rigorous process to determine the winners is carried out.
