Two men were on Wednesday charged at a Nairobi Court for stealing a barbeque grill worth Ksh60,000 at a Judge's residence during a party she had organised for her friends.
While appearing before Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Jacqueline Kahuya, the court learned that the two suspects had been employed at the Judge's residence in Lang'ata, one as a caretaker and the other as a mason, which allowed them easy access to the house.
Police officers attached to Lang'ata Police Station accused the two suspects of planning to steal the item specifically during the party when the judge was distracted.
According to the officers, the judge realised that her grill was missing when she was planning for another event.
The two suspects, however denied the charges, maintaining that they did not orchestrate the theft.
The Judge released the two suspects on Ksh20,000 bail and postponed the case to November 15, 2023, for pre-trial.
The incident highlights the increasing levels of insecurity in the country, with criminals developing strategies to rob unsuspecting victims.
The latest data by the National Council of Administration of Justice (NCAJ) indicated that cases of assault, theft and drugs were the most crimes reported to police stations, at 25 per cent, 18 per cent and 8 per cent respectively.
Others include offences against morality (7.5 per cent), breakings (6.9 per cent), economic crimes (4.75 per cent) and homicide (3.2 per cent).
From the data, cases of theft increased from 13,142 reported cases in 2021 to 17,386 cases in 2022.
