Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was on Tuesday summoned by the Senate Housing Committee to respond to issues raised by City residents.

This was after the Governor repeatedly ignored summons issued by the Parliamentary Committee.

According to documents issued by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, the Governor will be required to shed more light on the urban renewal plan for the Eastlands area.

The Senate had requested Sakaja for the information on June 16, which was not availed at the time necessitating the summon.

On the Eastlands case, the Committee needed clarification on allegations of intimidation and threats issued by County Government officials to leaders of residents' associations who opposed plans to redevelop the estates.

“Submit a copy of the agreement between the Israeli Government and the government of Kenya for the construction of the Estates through a tenant purchase scheme,” the notice read in part.

The estates affected included; Ofafa Jericho, Jericho Lumumba, New Pumwani/California and Ofafa Maringo.

The Governor was further requested to submit a statement of rent collected by the County Government of Nairobi since 1985 for Ofafa Jericho Estate, 1988 for Jericho Lumumba Estate and 1990 for Maringo Estate.

“Explain the circumstances under which the contractor was given approval for the redevelopment of New Pumwani/California Estate and then demolished Flat C- on May 27, 2023, at 2.00 a.m.,” the Committee advised.

Earlier in the year on October 4, Sakaja had been summoned by Parliament to expound further on the status of the operation of the Green Park Terminus.

The lawmakers also wanted the Governor to provide more information on the upgrading of Uhuru Park and Central Park.

A follow-up on the case was made on October 16. At this point, Sakaja was requested to furnish lawmakers with the required information.

Additionally, Sakaja was also requested to provide adequate information on the urban renewal plan for the Eastlands area.
