Residents of Thika town, Kiambu county staged a protest on January 27, after private developers allegedly seized a cemetery within the area.

The locals congregated with placards, branches and spades while chanting, “Let us stop land grabbing,”.

One of the protesters claimed that they were barred from accessing the graveyards, with developers claiming that they were authorised to construct houses on the land.

Another local claimed that a private developer had toured the cemetery with construction tools while accompanied by police officers.

"Since 2022, we've had no peace with these developers. We are seeking the government to help us," another lamented.

Furthermore, they alleged that the grabbers were working with government officials since they were always escorted by police officers.

They thus demanded the identities of individuals accused of colluding with the developers to be revealed.

"We are here because we saw these beacons, and people have been resting on this land for years and years. We wonder how will houses be developed on top of graveyards," another resident wondered.

Consequently, Residents from Gikumari Ruiru constituency Kiambu County on January 3, also took to the streets to protest against an alleged land-grabbing case

According to the residents, the land grabbers issued title deeds to unknown contractors despite the locals completing payments for the said parcels.

The contractors were forced to scamper for safety after the residents turned rowdy.
