Cars and Motorbikes Banned in Lamu Old Town

All vehicles -private and public- will not be allowed into Lamu Old Town.

A directive given by Lamu County Government will only allow an ambulance, a fire engine and a municipal tractor into the Old Town.

All motorbikes except three – belonging to the county government, Kenya Power Company and the Lamu Water Management Authority- have also been banned from the historic site.

The ban will be effective starting Friday.

Speaking to journalists in Lamu today, Lamu Governor Issa Timamy said the order will be enforced to save the historic town.

The town has been listed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The town, famously known for preserving the Swahili culture over the years is known for among other things- very narrow roads and paths.

As such, using vehicles in the area has been a challenge and most people have stuck to the traditional means of transport- donkeys.

Boda boda operators had become popular in the recent past but they might be a thing of the past, following the implementation of the directive by the county government.
