CJ Mutunga Reveals his Wealth

Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga has made public his wealth declaration, honouring a promise he made to Kenyans last year.

Mutunga through his social media account shared documents indicating that he owned an apartment (LR No: 209/4517-64) valued at Sh12.5 Million and another property located in Nairobi (LR No: 330/586-A3) which is worth Sh19.1 Million.

In addition, the CJ’s fortune extends to Kitui County where he has stakes in an ancestral land valued at Sh2 Million as at last year.

Mutunga, who earns a monthly net salary of approximately Sh1.1 Million, further disclosed that he has a saloon car worth Sh750,000 while his spouse has a Sh650,000 vehicle.

According to his wealth declaration documents, the Chief Justice had pocketed a net salary of Sh50 Million for the period of January 2012 to November 2015.

The Judiciary boss exposed that between January and December 2014, he got Sh10 Million as income from the Judicial Service Commission where he is the chairman.

Between January and June 2011, the CJ says he earned a salary of Sh17 Million and got Sh400,000 from Mutunga & Company Advocates. 

As of December 31, 2015, Mutunga disclosed that two of his bank accounts at Standard Chartered, a Kenyan shilling and dollar one, had Sh415,035 and 34,509 US dollars respectively. 

Meanwhile, Mutunga is set to retire in June to give his successor time to prepare before the next polls.

He expressed that his early retirement would also enable the country to avoid a political and constitutional crisis come next year's elections.

In February this year, the Chief Justice urged the President, his deputy, governors and MPs to volunteer themselves for lifestyle audits as a “true test of leadership against corruption”. 

Dr Mutunga observed that voluntary forensic audits are a sure means to gauge commitment by leaders in the war against corruption.
