CORD Demands Waki Envelope Opened

Opposition leaders now want the Government to make public details of the contentious Waki Report, over what they say is the need to reconcile the country.

Speaking on Saturday as their political rivals held a thanksgiving rally at Afraha stadium in Nakuru County, CORD politicians called for the opening of the Waki envelope, saying it would be the best foundation for reconciling Kenyans.

“Let us know what exactly happened, you cannot reconcile without truth. If there is some little bahasha let it be a basis for us to know what happened so that we can reconcile,” said Oburu Oginga.

On his part Gem MP and Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament Jakoyo Midiwo expressed that opening the report, which details findings of the Waki Commission in regard to the 2007 post election violence, would help Kenyans pursue a more truthful process towards national healing.

“Begin to chart the way forward beyond ICC and the way forward is injustices of land, the causes and sub causes of the 2007 violence, and we need to talk about the IEBC and the future of the election commission,” said Midiwo.

Addressing a gathering in Kibera, where CORD had staged their parallel rally, Senator James Orengo hit out at the Jubilee Government saying that had it been that names of Opposition leaders were in the famous envelope handed over to the ICC, Mr Kenyatta would have already opened it by now as a way of getting back at them.

The 529-page Waki report was handed over to Retired President Mwai Kibaki and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in October 2008.

The report, however, did not publicly disclose the alleged perpetrators in the report given to the President, but the Waki Commission instead handed the list of alleged perpetrators to Kofi Annan.
