County Government Legalizes Mnazi Brew

Traditional palm wine commonly known as mnazi has been legalized in Kilifi County.

Members of the County Assembly yesterday voted unanimously on a bill to declare the drink legal.

This came as an attempt to spare the brew from the ongoing second generation alcohol crackdown.

The heated debate saw MCAs justify their support for the drink which some claimed to be the only source of income for most residents.

Others added that the drink has many more beneficial qualities including the fact that it increases men’s libido, unlike some brews that have been blamed on men’s sexual failures.

The bill is now awaiting Governor Amason Kingi' assent to become law, The Standard reports.

Four days ago Kaloleni MP, Gunga Mwinga issued a one week ultimatum to those who led a crackdown on illicit brews in Mariakani and Kaloleni to apologize for destroying the 'mnazi' brew or face legal action.

According to NTV, the MP, and other leaders from the region condemned the destruction of the brew during the crackdown.
