The court on Wednesday made its first ruling in a case linking the Office of Deputy President William Ruto to the murder of controversial businessman Jacob Juma.
The case took an interesting twist on December 1st when a man identified as Douglas Nyakundi emerged claiming to possess a letter with details of the killers of the late Juma.
Principal Magistrate Charity Oluoch has now ordered Mr Nyakundi to undergo a mental check up following the explosive affidavit linking the DP's office to the allegedly well-orchestrated assassination. The ruling was made after he implicated human rights activist Boniface Mwangi of coaching him on what to tell the court.
Last week, Nyakundi was arraigned in court for allegedly trying to extort money from Mr Mwangi with a promise that the letter would help him prove his allegations that DP Ruto was involved in Juma's murder.
DP Ruto sued Mwangi a few months ago for defamation after the activist linked him to the murder of businessman Juma.
Nyakundi, who claimed to be a messenger working as a spy in the Office of Mr Ruto, purported to have been sent by a senior official in Ruto's office identified as Mr Rono to hand the letter.
He even promised to act as a key witness in the case where Mwangi has been sued by the deputy president.
According to the prosecution, the suspect vowed to furnish Mwangi with exclusive details of how the murder was planned and executed, adding that he would even introduce the activist to the purported killers.
Additionally, Nyakundi reportedly claimed to have more information regarding another plot to kill Mwangi through a staged accident.
He, however, asked the photojournalist, who recently declared interest in the Starehe parliamentary seat, to deposit an undisclosed amount of money in his account so that he could expose the plan.
Following the Wednesday's court ruling the activist noted: "When I met this man and he shared that story, I thought he was crazy and he assured me he is not mad, I replied they will say you're!"
