Deputy Governor Orders Employees to Call Him 'Doctor'

Tharaka Nithi Deputy Governor Eliud Mate has issued an early directive to county staffers regarding how he should be addressed after being conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.

In an internal memo dated 17 June, Mr Mate through his personal assistant stated: "This is to, therefore, notify all the members of staff that he ceases to be addressed to as ELIUD MATE MURIITHI and shall immediately after being conferred with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy be addressed to as H,E, HON DR. ELIUD MATE MURIITHIā€.

According to the memo, the Deputy Governor has already satisfied the board of examiners at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to be awarded the PhD.

In the letter, Tharaka Nithi staffers are invited to attend the ceremony set to be held on June 30.

The memo, which was confirmed as official by the County Chief of Staff, was circulated on social media attracting diverse reactions.
