Shocking details that emerged on how four Kenyans were killed in South Sudan have forced Foreign affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed to issue a statement on the issue early today.
In a statement to the press, CS Mohamed stated that the government was coordinating with its South Sudan counterpart to repatriate the bodies from a morgue in Juba.
It has emerged that the four aid workers working for Grassroots Empowerment and Development Organisation (GREDO) were ambushed and shot dead as they travelled to their base in Pibor on Saturday.
According to sources, the four were among a group of six and were waylaid at around 8am by men in jungle uniforms and carrying rifles, 340 kilometres north-east of the capital Juba.
The men reportedly ordered all the occupants out of their vehicles and directed them to lie down, then ransacked and looted their luggage.
It is further alleged that the men, believed to be rebels allied to former Vice-President Riek Machar, then shot the aid workers from point-blank range in the head and the back.
Their bullet-ridden bodies were later found by the roadside with their hands tied at the back and identification documents scattered nearby.
A convoy of protection forces from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan visited the scene on Tuesday and condemned the incident.
The European Union Delegation and heads of missions of 13 countries in Juba, called on the South Sudanese government to thoroughly investigate the attack to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The names of the victims have not been revealed since their families have not been notified.
