How Kenyans on Facebook Saved a Woman's Life

A campaign started on social media ended up being an answered prayer to a woman who had lived with massive fibroids for years.

Lucy Nyaguthie has been living with fibroids which grew at an alarming rate, reaching up to over 10 kilograms in weight.

The discomfort, pain and distended stomach meant that she could not do most chores or fend for her family.

Nyaguthie and her child were forced to rely on her husband- Charles Kinyanjui, for provision of basic needs.

Ndung'u Nyoro,  who came to learn of their plight shared the family's story on Facebook and appealed to well wishers.

A group of people responded and pledged to join Ndungu in helping the family which had lived in abject poverty for decades.

A facebook page named 'Charles and Lucy Initiative' would bring together a team, of well wishers from across the country.

The team, which had never met face to face before, gathered and took the Nyaguthie to hospital.

Among them, was a gynecologist-Dr. George Gwako, who pledged to perform the surgery without extra charges to the theater fee required.

The Facebook group of friends went further and build a house for the family and furnish it.

As Lucy Nyaguthie who had never interacted with social media before- continues to recuperate, her well being and grass to grace story will forever be a testimony of the positive power of social media.
