I Saw Them Take Bribes, Uhuru Says on 'Fired' Police Officers

President Uhuru Kenyatta has clarified why two police officers in Mombasa County could lose their jobs.

Addressing the 2016 Inspector General’s Conference at the Police Pavilion in South C, Nairobi, Kenyatta said he personally saw the officers taking bribes as opposed to earlier reports that they were punished for blocking his motorcade.

“Juzi nilikuwa Mombasa mtu amesimamisha gari katikati ya barabara akichukua pesa kutoka kwa abiria. Wale wote walikuwa nyuma including myself tunaona mtu akiokota pesa tutafikiria namna gani (Recently while in Mombasa I saw someone(police officer) stop a vehicle at the middle of the road and started collecting money from passengers. What do you think those who saw the officer receive money including me felt). We can't have this and must set the right example,” he said in reference to the incident.

The Head of State cautioned senior police commanders that he would not tolerate corruption within the service, appealing that they lead by example.

Ealier on, a section of media had reported that the officers were dismissed after blocking the President's entourage at Makupa in Mombasa.

According to the previous report, Barnaba Rutto and Joel Atuti had defended themselves claiming that they caught up with a matatu driver blocking other vehicles and tried to arrest him.

Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet also voiced his input on the same saying that a CCTV footage had actually captured the officers soliciting for bribes and parking wrongly thus leading to traffic jam.
