Judge Hellen Wasilwa Jails Kenya Medical Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Officials

Officials of the Kenya Medical Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) were on Thursday sentenced to 1 month in jail following the ongoing doctors' strike.

Presiding over the case, Employment and Labour Relations judge Hellen Wasilwa told the doctors that the jail term was a suspended one, allowing them a two-week negotiation period to end the mass action.

“ You have told me that you are still negotiating so I will give you a small window to ensure negotiations continue. I sentence you to one month in jail which is a suspended sentence which will fall on your head within two weeks if your strike is still on,” Judge Wasilwa said.

“You will be arrested wherever you are and taken straight to jail,” she added.

The doctors were in court for contempt charges after they declined to end the strike which had already been declared illegal

On Tuesday, Judge Wasilwa ordered the Kilimani OCS to ensure that the officials were apprehended, noting that the ongoing doctors' strike the KMPDU officials are leading is unlawful.

"The court cannot do anything else if the officials refuse to appear in court when required," Judge Wasilwa said.
