Kenyans to Stage Demos Outside Ethiopian Embassy

A mass demonstration against the Ethiopian embassy has been organised in Nairobi on Tuesday following the death of a Kenyan engineer, Zak Muriuki.

Kenyans have promised to stage a protest outside the Embassy, which is along State House Avenue, demanding the release of three others detained in Ethiopia.

According to the plan, the procession will start at 12.30pm after Mr Muriuki's requiem mass that will be held at Lutheran Church.

Kenyans will be outside the Ethiopian Embassy where they will light candles in solidarity with the deceased and those still under police custody.

A petition seeking the release of the trio will then be handed to the Ethiopian authorities.

"In the spirit of the African Union objective of forging greater unity and solidarity between African countries, Africans in general, we appeal to the Ethiopian government for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr Jedrick Mugo, Mr Maxwel Odhiambo and Mr Osborne Otinda," the petition reads in part.

Last week, the news of Zak's death caused an online storm when he was brought back to Kenya in a coffin after spending over 20 months in an Ethiopian jail.

Zak was arrested alongside Mugo in January 2015 after their arrival in Ethiopia where they had been sent to work for a client. The duo was accused of telecommunication fraud even before they were able to start working.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Zak's associate disclosed that: "Zak was arrested with another Kenyan engineer called Jedrick Mugo who is still in custody as the government there says it's still looking for evidence against him."

"The two had gone to Ethiopia to install VSAT equipment for a customer. This was a normal routine assignment and they had been there before and came back home safely. However, this time around, the customer's site was raided by Ethiopian police and the two arrested and booked by the police," our source said.
