Two Kenyans are among the survivors of the Brussels terrorist attack that happened in Belgium on Tuesday afternoon.
The two, a doctor and an airport employee, confirmed that they were at the Zaventem Airport when a bomb exploded killing more than 10 people.
Daniel Muturi, who works at Zaventem, narrated how he reported to work as usual before operations were disrupted by blasts at the departure area.
“I was in a building adjacent to the departure hall. First of all, there was a small explosion, and then seconds later, a bigger explosion,” Muturi stated.
Following the explosions, Mr Muturi said that passengers at the airport were thrown into disarray with everyone running for safety.
“After the explosion at the airport, people were running all over the place, because they were suspecting it was a Paris kind of attack. They were coming all over to the parking places, looking for safety,” the survivor added.
On the other hand, Dr William Maina, who is attached to the World Health Organization was almost leaving the country when the bombs went off.
Mr Maina is said to have frequently posted the events as they unfolded on social media, including how survivors were rescued.
“We are evacuated from the terminal building to the aircraft packing area. Confused and scared, all passengers troll their bags around. All you can hear are shouts from security,” he posted.
According to officials who responded to the attack, a suicide bomber blew himself up before a bigger explosion happened.
Moments later, another explosion took place at a train station where more people lost their lives bringing the total number of casualties to over 30, with about 200 sustaining injuries.
The attack has been condemned by world leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta, who termed the actions as an attack on democracy, the open society and values that Kenya holds.
