Law lecturer Prof. Makau Mutua has explained why Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi is the best candidate to ouster President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2017 poll.
The lawyer who seemingly gave a nod to the Opposition's National Super Alliance (NASA), stated that among the candidates presented, Mr Mudavadi would be the best pick if the grand plan was to work.
He opined that the ANC leader is a level-headed individual who is "neither polarising nor perceived as corrupt or conniving", adding that Mudavadi is "likeable and likely to surround himself with good advisers".
Mutua highlighted that Mudavadi was able to unite the country and also garner the Luhya Nation's votes for the Opposition.
"In terms of realpolitik, he has the potential to be a unifying national figure. He would bring in virtually the entire Luhya vote," Mutua wrote in his column.
According to Mutua, the other leaders in NASA, who include CORD leader Raila Odinga, Wiper's Kalonzo Musyoka and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula could lose hands down if either of them contested against Kenyatta.
"Mr Odinga, Mr Musyoka and Mr Mudavadi – must decide whether they hate Jubilee more than they dislike each other. Put succinctly, are Mr Odinga and Mr Musyoka ready to check in their egos and ambitions at the door so that they enter the Super Allinace? If not, they might as well vote for Mr Kenyatta and Jubilee for another five-year term," he said.
Mutua mentioned that Odinga must also decide whether he wants to be the king or the kingmaker.
He added that the only person who had no future in the NASA plan was Wetangula who he noted, "had no ambition at all".
"Mr Wetangula shouldn't even be in the conversation. But then you have to mollify him from returning to Jubilee, his natural home. That's why you offer him deputy prime minister, a post that overcompensates him for his abilities, though not ambition," Mutua noted.
He concluded by stating since NASA was all inclusive and it would succeed if "ego" does not get in the way.
