Man Burns Pregnant Wife While 'Fighting' Bedbugs

An expectant woman is nursing burn injuries at St. Mary's Hospital in Gilgil, Nakuru County, after her husband set their house on fire claiming he was trying to get rid of bedbugs.

Njoki Ndung'u, who was rescued by her neighbours, narrated that the incident happened after a verbal exchange with her husband.

“I saw him light a fire, when I tried to leave the house, the flames caught me and I returned to the bedroom,” she continued. “The door then locked itself from inside,” Ndung'u added.

According to one of the neighbours, Alice Wambui, they found the 22-year-old woman unconscious, after sensing trouble when they saw her husband burning his household items.

Wambui divulged that the young couple had been in constant domestic brawls and on that particular day, Njoki's husband was seen burning mattresses.

“When the neighbours asked him why he was burning the mattresses, he rudely answered that he was burning bedbugs in his house,” narrated Alice Wambui.

However, the victim has refuted the bedbug claims revealing that her husband's actions were prompted by auctioneers that would visit the home.

The man has since been arrested and is being held at the Gilgil police station.

St. Mary's Mission hospital Nursing Director Silas Marangu, assured that the 32-week pregnant woman is now in stable condition and will soon be discharged.

Earlier this year, a man from Nyamache, Kisii County, reportedly set his whole family on fire after the wife's parents rejected their marriage.
