Mau Mau Fighters Make Demands On Murang'a County

Mau Mau veterans in Murang'a County have presented a petition to the county government to have a pension scheme for the fighters included in the county's budget.

They also want to be officially named as heroes and heroines.

Members of the Mau Mau Veterans Association led by their secretary general Gitu Kahengeri said they had been forgotten despite having had a hand at liberating the country.

They say most of them live in abject poverty.

The Star reports that the veterans want some recognition for their work suggesting that government considers building monuments to commemorate freedom fighters.

The county assembly speaker accepted the petition, saying the county assembly would debate on it.

Mau Mau fighters have in the past sought compensation from the government for the suffering they went through during the colonial times.

They sued the British government seeking compensation for their troubles.
