MP Admits Helping Prostitutes In Nakuru

A Nakuru Member of Parliament (MP) elicited a heated debate among local leaders after admitting to helping commercial sex workers operate in his constituency.

Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria said that he has been aiding the sex workers since prostitution was a 'harmless act' and needed to be legalized.

The MP added that he was preparing a bill to legalize the practice to avoid deaths that had been witnessed in the town, where more than eight sex workers had been killed.

"If the trade was legal those women would be operating in a safe environment and not in dark alleys and unsafe streets," he was quoted by the Standard.

Mr Gikaria went ahead to defend the practice saying that there was nothing immoral about sex, and since it was being freely dispensed, there was no harm in charging for it.

However, the Legislator's words met with opposition from the County youth leaders who criticized the push to legalize prostitution.

"Prostitution is simply immoral and should remain a crime under the statutes. Legalizing prostitution would increase the spread of STDs," said Ms Kiiru, a nominated Member of County Assembly.

This comes after a tuk-tuk driver confessed to killing five out of the eight twilight girls murdered in the town over the last five months. The driver made the daring confession after he was nabbed with a dead body of a prostitute in his vehicle.
