Patients Die, Others Abandoned as Doctors' Strike Begins in Kenya

Pain and suffering have already begun taking a toll on patients across the country following the countrywide strike by health workers which kicked off on Monday.

Thousands of patients were turned away and denied medical attention while some in critical status lost their lives in the process

In Naivasha, it is reported that two people died while in Kakamega County a man admitted at the County Hospital committed suicide when medics asked them to vacate the wards.

22 prematurely born infants in Kitui General Hospital were left fighting for their lives as medical practitioners downed their tools.

The babies, who were being housed in incubators, were abandoned and left under the of care subordinate staff, who know little about monitoring their progress.

At the same time, in Bungoma County a watchman helped a pregnant woman deliver her baby outside the hospital after she was rejected.

In Nairobi, over 100 mentally-ill patients escaped from the Mathari Hospital while in Mombasa it is alleged that 60 of them were sent home.

On Monday health workers made good their threat to down their tools in a bid to push the government to implement a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) they signed in June 2013.

According to the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary-General Dr Fredrick Oluga, the Government had gone against their agreement for three years now.

The strike by the nearly 5,000 doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists and interns is seeking to push for a review of job groups, promotions, deployment and transfer of medical officers, as well as remuneration.

However, the court had on Friday ruled against the mass action and instructed dialogue among key stakeholders including Health Minister Cleopa Mailu and the Council of Governors.

Nonetheless, hospitals and other medical facilities remained dormant with the medics holding that they would not go back to work until the Government fulfils its end of the bargain.
