PHOTOS: Britain Apology to MauMau Fighters

The British Government has once again apologized to the Mau Mau victims of torture and ill-treatment during the colonial era. This was done amid a celebration where a memorial monument was unveiled in honor of the fighters at Uhuru Park today.

The function was officiated by the British High Commission, the Mau Mau War Veterans Association (MMWVA), Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), the Nairobi Governor’s Office and the National Museums of Kenya.

The memorial which was well attended is a symbol of reconciliation between the British government, the Mau Mau, and all those who suffered.

In his address, the British High Commission Dr. Christian Turner said, “To deal with the present and move forward into the future we have to recognize and learn from the past. This memorial is about reconciliation, allowing us to discuss together the issues arising from a difficult period in our shared history, and to move forward together,”

The memorial monument was funded by the British government and it follows a June 2013 decision by Britain to compensate more than 5,200 elderly Kenyans tortured and abused during Emergency Period (1952-1960).
