Police Officer Caught Harassing Female Motorist in Kericho Suspended

A female police officer has found herself on the wrong side of the law after a video clip showing her violently harassing a motorist in Kericho County was circulated widely on social media.

Kericho County Police Commander James Mugera stated the officer had been suspended as investigations commence.

"The concerned officer has been interdicted from duty to pave [the] way for investigations.

"An inquiry file has been opened to clearly establish the circumstances of the incident and our finding will be made public and appropriate action taken against anyone found to be in the wrong," Mr Mugera was quoted by the Nation.

The traffic officer, who was located at a road block near Duka Moja trading centre along the Kericho-Brooke road, was recorded forcibly arresting the alleged female traffic offender by pulling her by the belt and clothes.

In the dramatic video, the suspect - who identified herself as Marie Obara - is seen resisting arrest by holding onto her vehicle's window.

The 20-second clip angered many Kenyans who criticised the police officer for the harassment.

Mugera told journalists that Ms Obara was captured speeding by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officers near Chepseon trading centre but denied the charges when she was flagged down at the roadblock by police officers.

"When she was informed that she had been speeding, she disputed and in the process demanded to be shown the video clip of her speeding. As she was waiting for that to happen, other passengers in the vehicle started arguing with the police officer.

"At that point, it became necessary to have the motorist arrested and escorted to the Kericho Police Station for further action. That is where the tussle began because the lady resisted arrest, Mugera was quoted by the Standard.
