Raila Takes Quick Action to Stop Fights in CORD

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has resolved to recall all its nominees to the IEBC select committee following disagreements in the party.

The decision was arrived at after a Wednesday meeting led by coalition leader Raila Odinga at Orange House, Nairobi.

Odinga directed that the list is recalled for the Opposition team to review it and send a fresh one Thursday afternoon.

CORD announced that it had suspended appointment of the seven legislators over the growing discord occasioned by the composition of the team.

On Tuesday evening, Opposition legislators sharply differed on the composition of the select committee, with Wiper and Ford Kenya party leaders insisting the list was skewed and not gender sensitive.

Last week Wednesday, the Opposition announced that it had selected Senators Mutula Kilonzo (Makueni) and James Orengo (Siaya), Johnson Muthama (Machakos), MPs Eseli Simiyu (Tongaren), Hellen Sambili (Mogotio) Junet Mohamed (Suna East) and Mombasa Women Representative Mishi Mboko to engage their Jubilee counterparts in the talks.

Ms Sambili, however, dismissed her appointment stating that she was not informed of plans to represent the Coalition in the talks.

A section of FORD Kenya leaders wants Sambili's position taken over by Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale while female legislators in the coalition maintain that the replacement should be a woman.

Both CORD and Jubilee are set to form a 14-member Committee to spearhead discussions to resolve a stalemate regarding electoral reforms in the country.
