REVEALED: Nairobi Population in 2050

A World Urbanization Prospect survey has predicted the size of Nairobi City's population by the year 2050 and its position among the most populated towns worldwide.

The report titled, Socioeconomic Pathways and Regional Distribution of the World’s 101 Largest Cities, has predicted that Nairobi will have a population of 14 Million by 2050.

According to the survey, the City would be placed at position 29 on the list of top 101 most populated towns in the world.

The study, which assesses population growth in world largest cities, gave a detailed analysis of how Nairobi's population kept rising since 2010, and how the trend is expected to continue till end of the 21st Centrury.

In the report, Kenya's Capital is expected to have a total of over 5 Million residents by 2020 and will be placed at position 62 among the 101 cities. This figure would then increase to 28 million by the year 2050 when the city will be 14th on the list.

The research further indicated that the figure would keep rising to 46 Million by the year 2100, where the largest City in East Africa will be ranked at position 12 in the world.

Currently, the largest City in the world is Tokyo with more than 36 Million occupants, while Lagos in Nigeria leads in Africa with a population of more than 10 Million.

The prediction was conducted based on the trends and expected growth scenarios of towns in terms of historical patterns, level of urbanization, economic growth and fertility rates.
