Safaricom To Take Competition to Zuku's Doorstep

Mobile Service provider Safaricom is next month set to launch its own internet enabled digital television decoders.

The decoders will provide 4G high speed internet and access to video on demand and downloads.

The telecommunication company is in talks with local free-to-air broadcasters for consent to air their content.

According to Safaricom's CEO Bob Collymore the decoders will come pre-loaded with a SIM card, data bundle and a wi-fi router. The price at which the decoders will retail, could not be disclosed, with Mr Collymore only saying the price will be competitive.

The move will step up the battle for TV and data consumers with currently, Wananchi Group's Zuku TV the only voice, internet and broadcast package provider in the market.
