These Nairobi Buildings Will be Demolished on Tuesday

The Nairobi County Government has announced its resolve to immediately commence demolition of poorly constructed buildings within the Capital.

County Executive in charge of lands Christopher Khaemba stated that the demolition would begin on Tuesday next week targeting areas with the highest number of poorly constructed buildings.

According to the statement by Mr Khaemba, 58 buildings in the recently affected Huruma estate will be brought down.

Also set to be demolished are 28 buildings in Zimmerman estate and 19 houses in South B's Hazina estate owned by the National Social Security Fund.

Other areas said to be having poorly constructed buildings and will be targetted are Umoja, estates along Thika road and Dagoretti area.

In total, about 204 unsafe residential buildings spread across different areas in Nairobi have been earmarked for demolition.

The move comes after the recent Huruma tragedy where 51 people died after a poorly constructed building crumbled after heavy rains hit the city.

Revelations later emerged that the six-storey building had already been earmarked for demolition. Owners of the ill-fated Huruma building - two brothers; Samuel Kamau and Henry Muiruri - are facing charges of murder alongside engineers and city council officials who allowed the construction.
