TSC 'Improves' Teachers' Salaries

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has introduced leave allowances for teachers to be payable once in a year. House allowances and hardship allowances have also been reviewed and will be implemented in phases.

TSC confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that through a circular dated September 24, the commission agreed to have the leave allowance which would range from Sh4,000 to Sh 10,000 and would be paid at the beginning of the year alongside the January salary.

The lowest paid teachers would get house allowances ranging from Sh3,200 to Sh6,750 depending on where they are stationed while the highest paid teachers, would get house allowances ranging from Sh20,000 to Sh50,000 starting July 2017.

A flat rate of between Sh5,700 and Sh38,100 would be paid as hardship allowance backdated to July 2015.

TSC and the Salaries and Remuneration Committee (SRC) arrived at the new rates amid pressure from teachers to increase their basic salary.

“TSC in consultation with the SRC has reviewed house allowance and hardship allowances payable to teachers. It has also introduced leave allowance which would be payable once annually,” read the notice.

This comes after teachers failed to be awarded the 50-60 per cent pay rise by the Government despite the Industrial Court ruling in their favour in June.

Public school teachers launched a strike on September 1 championed by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET). The standoff that has lasted for a month, led to the official closure of all public schools in the country.

The latest ruling by Judge Nelson Abuodha suspended the teachers strike for 90 days and ordered them back to class. This is yet to happen as KNUT asked their members not to return to work until the union advised otherwise.
