TSC to Look into Facebook Accounts of Kenyan Teachers before Employment or Promotion

The effects of Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i's radical leadership continue to be felt by various stakeholders, the latest being teachers under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

TSC has now announced that it will probe into the Facebook accounts of its employees to ensure that the social media platform is not misused to cast the teaching profession.

Through the Director of Teacher Management Mary Rotich, TSC stated that the law compels teachers not only to behave responsibly at school but also on social media, adding that they would start looking into the conduct of their employees on all platforms before considering them for promotion.

“The Act gives us power to monitor the conduct of teachers, as the TSC we are thinking of starting to monitor what teachers exchange on social media. If you post irresponsible information on social media, such things do not show good conduct,” Ms Rotich added.

The new practice will also see the commission research on the social media activities of potential employees who undertake interviews at the TSC.

Rotich was speaking during an event meant to promote safer internet use where she requested teachers to be more proactive in using the social media platforms to share educative materials that can be of benefit to society and to the teachers.

The new rules of practice may also affect tutors in private schools given an earlier directive by Matiang’i, requiring all teachers to be certified by TSC for them to practice in Kenya.
